Public health officials have called the current opioid epidemic the worst drug crisis in American history. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) eight people die every hour of an overdose in this country — an average of 192 people a day. And, more people are diagnosed with substance use disorder in the U.S. than from all types of cancer combined! In addition, the CDC says, U.S. life expectancy dropped in 2017 and the decline is likely due in part to the continuing rise in drug overdose deaths.
For every death, and for every single individual derailed by drug abuse, there are multiple lives lingering in the shadows, teetering on ruin as collateral damage, families of the addicted. The toll it takes on families is severe — including financial ruin, health-related issues, failed marriage and mental illness just to name a few.
Drug addiction impacts more than the user and more than harming the family. It impacts the community, and strains government services responsible for responding to incidents connected to addiction (e.g., law enforcement, fire department, and social services). PAL is a critical part of the solution by offering peer-to-peer, facilitator led, addiction support services.
